Emily’s List

Fairfax County Office for Women
In Fairfax County, there are over 70 Board, Authorities, and Commissions that
work with the Board of Supervisors on a wide range of issues from planning
and economic development to assessing human service needs. Active, committed
County residents who represent the diverse views and talents of the entire
Fairfax community are needed for appointments by Supervisors throughout the
year. Volunteers needed to research women’s issues, assist in event
planning and perform clerical and administrative tasks. For details on the

through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Institute for Women’s Policy Research
Volunteer Opportunities include the following: working on public policy newsletters,
mailing, phoning, and data entry. Volunteers must be dedicated and enthusiastic.

Loundon Abused Women’s Shelter
Training sessions offered quarterly. Training required. Volunteer opportunities
include the following: Shelter Shift Volunteers are responsible for answering
the crisis hotline, responding to the needs of women in the shelter, assisting
batter women in the shelter; Women’s Resource Center/ Information and
Referral Volunteers answer the telephone and refer callers to the appropriate
agencies, help keep resource material up-to-date and perform general office
duties; Board Members attend quarterly meetings and committee meetings as
needed (requires approximately 10 hours per month): participate in fund raising
activities; approve shelter policies and confirm financial health of the
organization: help evaluate programs. These volunteers must be willing to

The Calvary Women's Shelter
The organization is presently looking for volunteers to work in the following
positions: Overnight Volunteer--these volunteers staff the shelter each night
of the year, attending to the residents’ needs throughout the night
and in the morning. This position is vital; without overnight volunteers,
the shelter could not operate. Evening volunteer--these volunteers will assist
the evening staff person in addressing all the needs of the clients in a
timely manner thus ensuring a smoother operation of the shelter in the evening

Alexandria Office of Women - Domestic Violence Program
Extensive training required. Assistance needed for a twenty-four hour hotline.
This organization also needs bilingual translator/ speaker to answer the
hotline. Shelter coverage volunteers needed; assistance needed for 15 weeklong
parent-nurturing program. Court advocates needed during morning hours to
accompany victims to court. Very fast paced; bilingual skills helpful. One-year

Tahirih Justice Center
Sseeks to enable women and girls fleeing gender-based violence to access justice
in the United States through high-quality pro bono legal services and bridge-building
public policy advocacy. Through its programs, the Tahirih Justice Center protects
immigrant women and girls seeking justice in the United States from gender-based
violence such as female genital cutting, torture, rape, trafficking, honor
crimes, forced marriage, and domestic violence.
