Opportunities: We have a volunteer program at the Reston Regional Library that matches technologically-skilled volunteers with those who are new to computers: our One-on-One Internet Tutoring. The sessions last one hour, during which time the tutor helps the student gain confidence in working with computers. Here are examples of the kinds of help that students often need:
how to use a mouse
how to use a web browser
how to set-up and use e-mail
how to save files to CDs and flash drives
how to use basic Office applications.

Requirements: At least 18 years old, at least 2 hours per week, We are looking for computer savvy candidates to help people with little or no computer skills gain confidence using a computer, basic office applications, email and the internet. The candidate must be comfortable working with people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. We do need to meet the candidate for not more than one hour prior to the start of volunteering. This gives us an opportunity to provide a tour of our facility and answer questions about the program to make sure it is a good match. We also have paperwork that can be filled out at that time.

Mission: The Earth Sangha is a non-profit public charity based in the Washington, D.C. area and devoted to environmental action as an expression of the Buddhist was of life. We operate an ecological restoration program tos restore native forests and meadors, stabalize streams, and control invasice alien plants.
Opportunities: Students will participate in various local ecological restoration projects involving the propagation and installation of native plants and the removal of invasive species in public parkland. During the spring through fall, they will help tend to the plans at our Wild Plant Nursery in Springfield, VA.  If the students are available for a few hours on weekends, they will help us during planting events.  This involves transporting tools, planting, and guiding other volunteers.  Work at the nursery generally involves watering, weeding, and mulching.  Invasives removal occurs year-round at several sites.  Since the nature of our work depends on the season, more specific details will be provided based on which semester that the students will participate. 
Hours: 9 or 10AM-early afternoon. During weekdays plan on at least a two hour commitment.
Requirements: No age requirement, no previous experience required.

Mission: To work toward a community free of domestic and sexual violence by encouraging our clients, our staff, and our community to act with responsibility, compassion and the hope that all can live in peace.
Our vision is for a community of empowered citizens who make safe and healthy choices for themselves and their families; educated citizens who offer personal support and public advocacy to create a violence free community; professionals who work as allies in responding to those affect by sexual, interpersonal, and family violence; and decision makers who are sensitive to these issues and use their positions to effect positive change.

Opportunities: The Office for Women and Domestic & Sexual Violence is currently conducting a "Going Green" project. At the end of the project, our paper archives and libraries will be available only in electronic format. We are in search of service learning participants to review files and assist in every aspect of this project. Duties include (but are not limited to) reading, categorizing, and prepping files to be electronically scanned. Once the files are prepared, they will be catalogued electronically and scanned into an electronic library and archives system.
Hours: M-F 9am-5pm
Requirements: At least 18 years old, 4-15 hours per week, 4 hours of mandatory training.
