For Faculty

Why use the pedagogy of community-based learning, like service-learning and community-based research?  Most faculty do it primarily because it works: students learn.

Research shows that students’ understanding of course concepts is enhanced, as is their ability to apply what they have learned to solve problems. Both the academic learning and the civic leadership goals we have for students are addressed through community-based learning (Mitchell, 2008).

The Center for Leadership and Community Engagement supports all Mason faculty as they use community-based learning in creative ways to meet their course goals for student learning. You are welcome to explore our Faculty Handbook as well as the Faculty Wiki, where we encourage everyone to post resources such as course syllabi. If you are interested in exploring how to implement service-learning or community based research into one of your courses, please contact us.
