Mission: Alcohol and Drug Services seeks to reduce alcohol and other drug problems among residents and employees of Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. To accomplish this goal, our staff reaches out to groups and individuals at high risk of developing such problems and extends prevention and treatment services to youth, adults, and family members who are experiencing problems associated with alcohol and/or drug use.

 AFDC serves as a site for service-learning and internships. AFDC invites interns from a variety of programs. Mission: To encourage, define and organize challenging volunteer opportunities. We provide opportunities for volunteers to use their gifts and abilities for the benefit of the individual and the community.
Opportunities: Adapted Aquatics: Assisting individuals with disabilities in learning to swim. The focus is on water safety, breath control, pulling and kicking, and adjustment skills. Volunteers MUST be able to swim. Ten weekly sessions; usually held on Sunday afternoons. Adult Arts and Crafts: Volunteers assist adults with disabilities in learning to create dynamic works of art with various materials. Eight weekly sessions; usually Monday evenings.

Asian American LEAD (AALEAD)’s mission is to promote the well-being of low-income and under-served Asian American youth through education, leadership, and community building. We are the leading community organization that provides educational enrichment and youth development programs to low-income and under-served Asian American youth in the Washington, D.C., metro area. Our highly dedicated staff and Board deliver specialized after-school programs, one-on-one mentoring, academic support resources, and life skill development for students. We also assist parents with school related issues affecting their children. Our goal is to provide a nurturing environment and culturally sensitive guidance so that each child we serve will be a contributing member of his or her community. Our programs currently serve over 300 students in the District and Maryland, who represent more than 14 different Asian ethnicities.

Facilitating with behavioral group, such as smoking cessation and anger management groups. Students will also be needed in all departments expanding their knowledge of the senior population, mental health issues, and the issues staff face day to day.

Please describe the type of supervision and orientation that students will receive: The department head, in which they are volunteering, will supervise the service-learner.  All will initially report to the Volunteer Coordinator and will report to him upon completion.  Any problems and concerns can be brought to the aforementioned supervisors and can also be taken to the Volunteer Coordinator.

Mission: Wright to Read is an educational program that promotes literacy through tutoring and mentoring of elementary school students and outreach to the Alexandria community.
Opportunities: Two on-going volunteer opportunities: After School Reading Program; Tutor/Mentor Program. Both programs involve working one-on-one with elementary school students, helping to improve their literacy by reading books and working on different comprehension activities.
Can you accommodate student groups? We don't regularly have projects for groups, but we have occasionally come up with projects for groups. We are also trying to expand our after-school program and if we could get a group of students to commit one afternoon a week, then we could definitely do a student group.
Application Process: Wright to Read's Volunteers attend an orientation where we go over the program, requirements, and the application process. All of our Volunteers are invited to attend a training.For our Volunteers who work in our Tutor/Mentor program, we also require them to do a criminal background check and screening.
