Alternative Break Frequently asked questions

What does an AB leader do?

AB leaders are responsible for some of the most important tasks in the AB program including coordinating logistics for the trip, interviewing participants, developing and facilitating education and service activities, and providing team members with resources to have a safe and meaningful experience.  AB leaders are required to attend weekly meetings where they will discuss the status of the trip, express questions or concerns, and plan with their co-leader(s).  We are looking for individuals who will act as liaisons between the community and Mason team members, and who are willing to work closely with Center for Leadership and Community Engagement staff, and are comfortable delegating leadership roles to others on the trip.

How do I become an AB leader?

AB leaders must fill out an application in order to participate.  In addition, a trip proposal may be submitted.  Once an application has been submitted, a member from our office will contact you to set up an interview.

Can I get credit as a leader?

Absolutely!  The credit option is offered for both AB leaders and team participants by demonstrating their learning through a variety of papers and reflection activities.  Sample Syllabus*
